今日は"As COVID-19 grows stealthier, battle plans are redrawn"と言う記事からです。

eludeは2回目なので復習です。

さて、南アフリカ共和国で発見されたコロナの変異種には、ワクチンや新種の治療法の効果がないという懸念が出てきてます。

新型コロナに感染した患者の血液中の抗体を使い、科学者らが検査したところ、

サンプルの半分で変異したウイルスに全く効かず、再感染する可能性が示唆されてます。

この先、ワクチンを打ったところで、万能なのか心配になります。

Etymology dictionaryによれば、1530s, "delude, make a fool of," from Latin eludere "finish play, win at play; escape from or parry (a blow), make a fool of, mock, frustrate; win from at play," from assimilated form of ex "out, away" + ludere "to play". 語源はラテン語の eludereで、 ” e（=ex 外へ）, ludere（遊ぶ，演じる）”ということで、「外へ向かってふざけていく」というニュアンスですかね。

意味

Oxford learner's dictionariesによれば、1)elude somebody/somethingで、 to manage to avoid or escape from somebody/something, especially in a clever way、2)elude somebody if something eludes youで、 you are not able to achieve it, or not able to remember or understand itとあります。1)は「（巧妙に）～を避ける」、2)は「思い出せない、理解できない」ですね。
