今日は"Mori steps down over sexism outrage"と言う記事からです。

succumbは昨年の12月以来の2度目です。という事で復習です。

さて、また森さんの記事です。とうとう辞任されますね。

やはり、こうせざるを得ないです。

次は、イメージ刷新もかねて女性が良いと思います。

東京オリンピック招致に尽力された森氏、元東京都知事の猪瀬氏、元JOC会長の竹田氏そして、前首相の安倍氏、揃って表舞台からいなくなっちゃいました。

やはり、東京五輪は呪われているんですかね。

Etymology dictionaryによれば、late 15c., from Old French succomber "succumb, die, lose one's (legal) case," and directly from Latin succumbere "submit, surrender, yield, be overcome; sink down; lie under; cohabit with," from assimilated form of sub "under, beneath" + -cumbere "take a reclining position," related to cubare "lie down". という事で、ラテン語のsuccumbereが起源です。sub- 「下に」 + cumbere “to lie down”、つまり、下に横たわる、というニュアンスです。

意味

Oxford learner's dictionariesによれば、1)to not be able to fight an attack, a temptation, etc.、2)succumb (to something)で、 to die from the effect of a disease or an injuryとあります。1)は「屈服する」、2)は「倒れる」と言いう訳になりますか。

succumbは自動詞なので、succumb to ～で、「～に負ける、～に屈服する」となります。
