今日は"Tackling loneliness amid a rise in suicides"と言う記事からです。

孤独問題担当大臣というポジションがあると初めて知りました。イギリスでも同様なものがあるようです。

また、自殺、貧困、ひきこもりに関連した、複数の省庁にわたる孤独の問題に取り組むタスクフォースも金曜日に設立されてます。

日本では、生涯独身者の増加と晩婚傾向の高まりで、2040年には一人暮らしの割合が全世帯の40％近くになり、1970年のほぼ2倍になると推定されています。

日本の単身世帯では、75.7％が隣人とのコミュニケーションはまったくない、またはめったにないそうです。

Etymology dictionaryによれば、tending or having the power to pervade," "1750, with -ive + Latin pervas-, past-participle stem of pervadere "spread or go through," from per "through" + vadere "to go". と説明があります。pervadeの形容詞形で、pervadeはラテン語のpervadereです。"per"は「を通して」、"vade"には「行く」という意味があります。

意味

Oxford learner's dictionariesによれば、existing in all parts of a place or thing; spreading gradually to affect all parts of a place or thingと説明があります。「まん延する」の事です。語源からあまり連想できないです。

補足
beef upはよく見かけるイデオムです。to make something bigger, better, more interesting, etc.という事で「～を増強する」ですね。
