2021/3/2(Tue)はchastise です。
今日は"Elite official's resignation a setback to Suga"と言う記事からです。
この単語はきっと初だと思います。
さて、最近、この報道が多いですね。
そんなことより、マスコミは中国の話題を取りあげるべきです。
中国冬季五輪の中継の権利を剥奪されるのが怖いのでしょうか?その前に中国冬季五輪ってあるでしょうか?ボイコットする国がたくさん出るでしょうね。

語源
Etymology dictionaryによれば、"to inflict pain upon to punish and recall to duty, to punish for the purpose of correcting or reclaiming," c. 1300, chastisen, from Old French chastiier "to warn, advise, instruct; chastise, admonish; punish; dominate, tame" (12c., Modern French châtier), from Latin castigare "to set or keep right, to reprove, chasten, to punish," literally "to make pure". Or perhaps from Middle English chastien (see chasten) + -ise, though this would be early for such a native formation. The form of the modern word "is not easily accounted for" [OED].
長い説明ですが、ラテン語の castigare が語源という事でよいでしょうか?意味は懲らしめるとか、叱責するとか、罰するとか、あまりいい感じの単語ではなさそうです。
意味
Oxford learner's dictionariesによれば、1)chastise somebody (for something/for doing something) (formal)の形で、to criticize somebody for doing something wrongとあります。「~を厳しく批判する」です。
