今日は"Allies get tough on China in security talks"と言う記事からです。

このcoalesceは初めてだと思います。

さて、2＋2の終了後に発表された共同声明では、名指しで中国を批判するという異例の内容となっています。

茂木外務大臣曰く、「中国による既存の国際秩序に合致しない行動は、日米同盟及び国際社会への様々な課題を提起しているとの認識で一致しました」という事です。

これに対して、中国の目の細い報道官が何か言ってるようですが軽く流しましょう。

Etymology dictionaryによれば、1540s, "grow together, unite by growing into one body," from Latin coalescere "unite, grow together, become one in growth," from assimilated form of com- "together" + alescere "be nourished," hence, "increase, grow up," inchoative of alere "to suckle, nourish," from PIE root *al- (2) "to grow, nourish."という事で、ラテン語のcoalescereが語源です。分解すると、coはcomの事で「一緒に」＋alescere「成長する」です。

意味

Oxford learner's dictionariesによれば、coalesce (into something)の形で、 to come together to form one larger group, substance, etc.とあります。「合体する、融合する」という意味です。語源と通じうものはありますね。

補足
thrust intoは、thrustがto push something/somebody suddenlyなので、想像つきます。入り込むとか、追い込まれる、です。
