今日は"Nissan expects move toward profit despite chip shortage"と言う記事からです。
furloughは以前書いたと思うので、復習になります。
さて、あまりにもクリーンなイメージのない日産ですが、決算発表がありましたね。
3月期の純損失は、前年同期の6,712億円から4,487億円に縮小してるようなので、改善はしているんでしょうね。
今年度も赤字を維持するものの、収益がでる状態に近づきつつあり、600億円の純損失を見込んでいます。
さて、今日はトヨタ自動車の決算発表ですね。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、名詞が先で、1620s, vorloffe, "leave of absence," especially in military use, "leave or license given by a commanding officer to an officer or a soldier to be absent from service for a certain time," from Dutch verlof, literally "permission," from Middle Dutch ver- "completely, for" + laf, lof "permission," とあります。
もともとは、「軍人の休暇」 という意味のようです。オランダ語のverlofから来てるようですが。In English, the elements of it are for- + leave. という説明もありますので、furlough は、for + leave（休暇）という事ですね。とにかく休暇です。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、to give somebody permission to leave their duties for a period of time, especially soldiers working in a foreign country と説明があります。「～を一時解雇する」とか、「～に休暇を与える」です。
