habitual

2021/7/29(Thu)はhabitual です。

今日は"Tokyo's virus surge differs from previous peaks, testing existing measures"と言う記事からです。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、mid-15c., "customary, belonging to one's inherent disposition," from Medieval Latin habitualis "pertaining to habit or dress," from Latin habitus "condition, appearance, dress," originally past participle of habere "to have, hold, possess; wear; find oneself, be situated; consider, think, reason, have in mind; manage, keep," from PIE root *ghabh- "to give or receive."

Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、usual for or typical of somebody/something、done, often in a way that is annoying or difficult to stop、 (of a person) doing something that has become a habit and is therefore difficult to stop と説明があります。

In addition, the habitual declaration of states of emergency is damaging the effectiveness of voluntary countermeasures, and subsequent restrictions — shorter business hours and banning restaurants, bars and dining establishments from serving alcohol — are also choking the economy. *1

happening or coming after something elseの事で「それに続く」ですね。chokeは、to be unable to breathe because the passage to your lungs is blocked or you cannot get enough air; to make somebody unable to breatheの事です。
