今日は"U.S. urges Japan to shoulder more of costs for hosting American troops"と言う記事からです。
convinceは基本的な単語で「説得する」と言う意味ですが、使い方で「あれっ」と思ったので復習の意味で取り上げます。
さて、安全保障の話ですが、米国は、日本にもっと米軍駐留に関わる費用の分担を求めています。
具体的には、米国は、中共の軍事的拡大に対して、インド太平洋地域における米軍のプレゼンスを高めることを目指しているため、日本にもっと費用負担を増やすよう求めています。
ちなみに、2021年度から来年3月までの日本は、前年度とほぼ同じレベルの2,017億円（18億4,000万ドル）を負担することになってます。
この金額って、日本が独自で戦闘機を開発したり、各種先端兵器を開発するのに比べればだいぶ安いような気もしますが、どうでしょう。
少なくとも、中共が内部崩壊して民主国家になるまでは、費用負担増加は避けられないのかなと思います。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、1520s, "to overcome in argument," from Latin convincere "to overcome decisively," from assimilated form of com-, here perhaps an intensive prefix (see com-), + vincere "to conquer" (from nasalized form of PIE root *weik- (3) "to fight, conquer"). Meaning "to firmly persuade or satisfy by argument or evidence" is from c. 1600. とあります。
ラテン語の convincereが由来で、意味はto overcome decisivelyです。接尾辞のcomは強調しているだけで、語幹のvincereにはconquer「征服する」の意味があります。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、to make somebody/yourself believe that something is true、 to persuade somebody to do something と説明があります。「～を確信させる」です。
convinceって第四文型SVOOの動詞か？という事です。もしかしてinform A of Bとか、remind A of Bと同じように、convince A of B「AにBを納得させる」が基本で、このBの部分がthat節や不定詞で、そしてofが省略されたと考えることもできます。
