2021/11/8(Mon)はplenary です。

今日は"China ruling party plenary to further cement Xi's grip on power"と言う記事からです。

plenaryは、あまり見かけない単語です。レベル12、英検1級以上の単語だそうです。

さて、今日も1面は中共に関する記事です。多いですね。。

中共は今日から開催される第19期中央委員会第6回全体会議で、「歴史決議」とやらを審議するようです。何のことかよくわかりませんが。。。

現国家主席の更なる基盤強化が狙いでしょう。過去「歴史決議」が採択されたのは、毛沢東とトウ小平の時代以来だそうです。

ちなみに、これらの審議は中共幹部が集まる密室で行われるそうです。

我々民主主義の国にいる者からみると、かなり時代遅れの感じがしますが。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、early 15c., plenarie, "full, complete," earlier plenar (mid-13c.), from Old French plenier and directly from Medieval Latin plenarius "entire, complete," from Latin plenus "full, filled, greatly crowded; stout, pregnant; abundant, abounding; complete," Of an assembly, "fully attended," 1530s. Meaning "having full power" is from 1861. とあります。古フランス語のplenier、中世ラテン語のplenarius、ラテン語のplenusまで遡るようです。このpleは、「満たす」の意味があるようです。とにかく、もとは「いっぱいの」の意味ですね。

 意味 

Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、形容詞では、(of meetings, etc.) to be attended by everyone who has the right to attendと、without any limit; complete と説明があります。前者は「（会議が）全員出席の」、後者は「十分な」です。どちらも満たされている状態なので、語源とつながります。

世界で最も人口の多い国の競争相手のいない指導者である中国の習近平国家主席は今週、共産党のトップが全員揃う重要な本会議を率い、終身国家主席としての方向付けを行います。

 補足 
pivotalは、よく見ますが、調べてみると思った意味と違いました。of great importance because other things depend on itという事で、「重要な」の意味です。pivotalはimportantと異なり、a new and changed direction as a result of new informationを暗示してるようです。
