さて、今日はおむつの記事です。
おむつと言えば赤ちゃんと連想しますが、今や日本は赤ちゃんよりも高齢者の方が、おむつを使う量が多いようです。
出生率は減って、高齢者は増え続けているので、これは事実だと思いますが、こうなると将来日本のごみの多くがおむつという事になってしまいます。実はこれは地味な大きな問題になっているようです。
そこで、人口10,500人強の鳥取県の伯耆町では、おむつをボイラーなどの燃料に転換すると言うことやってるようです。町にある2つの焼却炉のうちの1つをおむつリサイクルプラントに改造し、これにより公衆浴場などでは暖房費を削減できているとの事です。
おむつから転換された燃料のペレットは、以前にボイラーで使用されていた石炭や石油ガスよりも環境への負担は低いという事です。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、directly from Latin divertere "to turn in different directions," blended with devertere "turn aside," from vertere "to turn" with, in the first word, an assimilated form of dis- "aside," and in the second with de- "from." とあります。ラテン語のdivertereが語源のようです。diはdis-の事で「離れて」、vertereは、「向きを変える」という意味らしいので、「別の方向を向く」というのが大元の意味でしょうか。

Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、to make somebody/something change direction、to use money, materials, etc. for a different purpose from their original purpose と説明があります。前者は「～を（方向）転換させる」、後者は「～を転用する」です。語源と通じます。

As the country groans under the weight of ever-rising mountains of this waste, the town of Houki has become a pioneer in trying to reduce it. By recycling the diapers, which represent about one-tenth of the town’s trash, it has diverted garbage that would otherwise be dumped in incinerators and add emissions to the atmosphere. *1
急速に高齢化する日本では、赤ちゃんよりも高齢の失禁者が多くのおむつを使用しています。増え続けるこの廃棄物の山で国がうめいている中、鳥取県伯耆町は、それを減らす試みの先駆者になりました。町のゴミの約10分の1を占めるおむつをリサイクルすることで、焼却炉に捨てられ、そして排気を大気に出すゴミを（燃料へ）転用しています。
補足
diaperは、a piece of soft cloth or other thick material that is folded around a baby’s bottom and between its legs to take in and hold its body waste、「おむつ」です。incontinentは、not able to control the bladder and bowelsとありますが、つまり「失禁の」です。最後に、groanですが、to make a long deep sound because you are annoyed, upset or in pain, or with pleasureの事で、「うめく」でしょうか。「不平不満を言う」という意味もあるようです。
