中国、イラン、ベネズエラなどの”向こう側の国”は、いろんな意味で難しい立場に置かれますね。
特に中共は、当初はロシアの立場に理解を示しつつ深入りを避けてきましたが、ロシアへの批判が世界的に高まる中で、事態の沈静化を強く求めるようになってます。
明らかに、この2つの独裁国家は戦略を見誤ったと思います。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、pryには異なる二つの意味があって、それぞれ起源違うようです。今日は、 from a noun meaning "large lever used to raise or move heavy things, crowbar;" an alteration of prize (as though it were a plural) in its obsolete sense of "lever" (c. 1300), from Old French prise "a taking hold, grasp" のほうです。古フランス語の priseに関連しているようです。力で持ち上げたり、動かしたり、こじ開けたりするという意味らしいです。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、 to use force to separate something from something elseと説明があります。「力ずくで～を外す」です。語源のままです。

補足
lost cause は、something that has failed or that cannot succeedで、成功の見込みがない運動、試み・努力の意味だそうです。committed partnersの意味がよくわからないです。
