precipitousは初です。文脈から想像は出来たのですが。この単語はレベル11、英検1級以上です。
さて、とうとう日本も6月10日から海外からのツアー客を、段階的ですが、入国できるようにするみたいです。
日本は現在、外国人観光客の入国を許可していないG7の中で唯一の国です。G7以外では、中共も中国への入国に制限を設けています。
いよいよコロナも終焉かと言う感じがしますね。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、1640s, "rash, done with excessive or undue haste" (a sense now obsolete), also "rushing headlong, violently hurried," from obsolete French precipiteux (16c.), from Vulgar Latin *praecipitosus, from praecipitare "to throw or dive headlong; be hasty" とあります。いろいろありますが、結局はラテン語のpraecipitareが由来のようです。説明はありませんが、prea-は「先に、前に」＋cipitareはよくわかりませんが、caput「頭」に関連していると思われます。「先に頭」なので、真っ逆さまに落ちると言う感じです。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、sudden and great と説明があります。「（数値などの上下が）急激な、突然の」の意味です。
