Etymology Dictionaryによれば、late 15c., with -y (2) + ware, from Old English wær "prudent, aware, alert, wary," from Proto-Germanic *waraz (source also of Old Norse varr "attentive," Gothic wars "cautious," Old Saxon giwar, Middle Dutch gheware, Old High German giwar, German gewahr "aware"), from PIE root *wer- (3) "perceive, watch out for." です。古英語のwær、ゲルマン祖語の*waraz、印欧祖語の*wer-から来てるようです。用心深い、注意する、というのが元の意味です。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、careful when dealing with somebody/something because you think that there may be a danger or problemと説明があります。大昔から意味は変わっていないようです。「用心深い、慎重な」の意味です。通常はwary of～で使われます。
