さて、26日に投票が行われた台湾の統一地方選挙で与党・民進党が敗れ、蔡英文総統は自身が兼務してきた党のトップの主席を辞任する意向を表明しました。
これで、台湾も中国共産党にやられるか？と思いますが。。
対中融和路線を取る国民党が勝利し、中国への対立姿勢を鮮明にする民進党が敗北した結果になりましたが、これをもって台湾世論が対中融和路線を支持したとみるのは尚早と言うのが一般的な見方です。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、"to soil with soot or mud, to sully," now usually figurative, 1590s, from be- + smirch.です。で、smirchですが、late 15c., "to discolor, to make dirty," of uncertain origin, perhaps from Old French esmorcher "to torture," とあります。
という事で、be-「全面的に」＋smirch「色あせる、汚す」という事です。なんとなく、意味が想像できます。
