とある調査によると、5人までの忘年会を予定している人は、同僚との忘年会で63％、プライベートな友人との忘年会で80％だそうで、親しい友人など少人数のグループで楽しい時間を過ごしたいと考えている人が多いとのことです。
まだ、会社の仲間大勢でどっと飲みに行くのはないようです。もう永遠にないかもしれませんね。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、from French déserter "cause to leave," literally "undo or sever connection," from Late Latin desertare, frequentative of Latin deserere "to abandon, to leave, forsake, give up, leave in the lurch," from de "undo" (see de-) + serere "join together, put in a row". です。
フランス語のdéserter、後期ラテン語のdesertare、ラテン語のdeserere「放棄する、去る、放棄する、あきらめる、急いで去る」が由来のようです。deは「取り消す」、serereは「結合する、並べる」です。なので、「つながりから離れる」の意味だと思います。
