さて、日本の政令指定都市6都市の市長選が日曜日に正式に始まりました。所謂、統一地方選挙です。6都市とは相模原市、浜松市、静岡市、札幌市、大阪市、広島市です
特に札幌市では、3期目を目指す現職に2人の新人が挑む構図で、市が目指す2030年冬のオリンピック・パラリンピック招致の是非が最大の争点となります。
その他の都市についても、そこに住む方にとっては生活に密接に関する重要な選挙です。この前国会議員を首になったような、無責任な人が選ばれないように、ちゃんと投票所に足を運んで、選挙に参加しましょう。
選挙に関心がなくなると、中国共産党や、ロシアや北朝鮮みたいな嘘ばかり言う独裁国家になってしまいかねません。

Sense of "to contend (with) in rivalry" in English is from 1560s; that of "to contend, compete, strive for superiority" is from c. 1600.です。
中英語のenvie「挑戦する」の短縮形、古フランス語のenvier「競争する、etc.」、ラテン語のinvitare「招待する、召喚する」が由来のようです。英語の「ライバル関係で争う」という意味は 1560 年代からのものです。
