なかなか目にかからない単語です。日本人にしてみればほぼオタククラスでしょうか。
- 発音：ポンダー(赤字がアクセント)
- 品詞：他動詞、自動詞
- 語源：古フランス語のpondererで、これはweighと言う意味なので重さを量るという事らしいです。
- 意味：to think about something carefully for a period of time、つまりcontemplateが同義語で、～を塾考する、です
- 使用例
Pondering who is to brame in the absence of a conclusive investigation I think is in itself not vey responsible.*1
決定的な証拠を明らかにする調査が無い中で、誰が非難されるべきかを塾考するのは、それ自体、無責任であると私は思う。
ponderingから始まりinvestigationまでが主語、I thinkは挿入句、in itsselfは”それ自体、本質的に"を意味するイデオムです。conclusive investigationがちょっと訳しにくいですね。conclusive evidenseとかはわかるのですが。。。
to blameって、to be blamedじゃなないの？と言う議論がある、そのto blameです。これは結局、どっちも正しいという結論だったでしょうか？
