hindrance

Old English hindrian "to harm, injure, impair, check, repress," from Proto-Germanic *hinderojan , derivative verb from a root meaning "on that side of, behind"; thus the ground sense is "to put or keep back," though this sense in English is recorded only from late 14c. という事で、ゲルマン祖語 の*hinderojanが語源のようです。

派生的した意味としてkeep backがあるようですが、ここから、「先に行くのを阻む」⇒ 「~を妨げる/邪魔する/遅らせる」という意味になったと思われます。

 意味

Oxford learner's dictionariesによれば、1)a person or thing that makes it more difficult for somebody to do something or for something to happen、2)the act of making it more difficult for somebody to do something or for something to happen

と説明があります。1)は「障害物、邪魔者」、2)は「妨害」のことですかね。
