今日は”Tokyo to lift measures on dining, travel"と言う記事からです。

東京都は１０日に２３区内の飲食店などに求めている営業時間の

短縮要請を１５日で終了することを決めました。

また、旅行など都外への外出自粛要請の解除も決定してます。

本当に、これでいいのか。。ちょっとわかりませんが。

古期フランス語のestouffer。

「窒息させる」の意味だそうです。

似たような感じで、スタイと言うのがあります。

首にかけるよだれかけの事です。

首にかけると言うのは似てますね。

意味

オックスフォードオンライン辞書によれば、

to feel unable to breathe, or to make somebody unable to breathe, because it is too hot and/or there is no fresh air

とか、

to prevent something from happening; to prevent a feeling from being expressed

つまり、「～を窒息させる」、「～を鎮圧する」、「(声や感情)を抑える」

です。

補足

chokeは、to be unable to breathe because the passage to your lungs is blocked or you cannot get enough air; to make somebody unable to breatheで、今日のstufleに似てます。

記事のstifleやchokeは、比喩的な使い方ですね。
