昨日に続きミャンマーのクーデターの記事です。
せっかく、2011年にミャンマーが民主化されて、西側の企業は最後のフロンティア市場とばかりに投資を加速したことは記憶に新しいです。
が、2017年のロヒンギャ問題が人権問題として国際社会から非難を受けるようになってから、ミャンマーは中国への依存を高めていったそうです。
ここでも中国の影が。。。

repressの名詞形です。で、repressはEtymology dictionaryによれば、late 14c., "to check, restrain," from Latin repressus, past participle of reprimere "hold back, curb," figuratively "check, confine, restrain, refrain," from re- "back" + premere "to press, hold fast, cover, crowd, compress"とあります。語源はラテン語のreprimereですかね。
re「後ろ」とpremere「押す」なので、「後ろに押して引っ込める」という事かなと思います。
意味
Oxford learner's dictionariesによれば、the act of using force to control a group of people and limit their freedomとあります。「（自由の）抑圧」です。
ちなみに、repressはto try not to have or show an emotion, a feeling, etc.やto use political and/or military force to control a group of people and limit their freedomのことです。
