テニスの４大大会、全仏オープンで記者会見拒否を表明していた大坂なおみ選手は５月３１日、ツイッターで大会を棄権する意向を表明しましたね。
記者会見を拒否すると、高額な罰金が科せられるようです。
優勝した１８年の全米オープン以来、うつ病に苦しんでいたそうです。
彼女は、人前に出ることが得意ではなく、メディアの前に立つときは緊張の波に襲われたことも述べています。
ん、、いろいろ議論が今後ありそうです。

語源
Etymology Dictionaryによれば、from Latin expellere "drive out, drive away," from ex "out" + pellere "to drive" . とあります。
ラテン語のexpellereが語源で、ex+pellereと分解出来て、driveは「追いやる」という意味もあるので、「外へ追いやる」と言う感じだと思います。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、expel somebody (from something) の形で、to officially make somebody leave a school or an organization と説明があります。「～を追い出す」です。語源のままです。
