dearthって、あまり見ない単語です。
とうとう、6月21日から職場や大学でCOVID-19ワクチン接種が始まります。
今年、本当にワクチン接触ができるのかどうか心配してましたが、何とかこのような段階に来たのですね。
企業や大学などの協力で接種を受ける方が増えていけば、市町村が実施する一般接種もより受けやすくなり、接種の加速化が期待できるわけです。
いよいよ、コロナ禍の終わりが見えてきた気がします。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、abstract noun from root of Old English deore "precious, costly" (see dear) + abstract noun suffix -th とあります。
ゲルマン語が由来のようで、 dear「高価な」に、形容詞や動詞から名詞を作るときに使う接尾辞のthがついたようです。dearですが、今は使われていない意味として、「得がたい、まれな、品薄の」がありますが、これが意味を知るうえでヒントになりそうです。

Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、dearth (of something)や a lack of somethingの形で、 the fact of there not being enough of と説明があります。「不足」です。lackの事です。
