今日は"Youth clobbered, elderly spared in Japan’s worst-ever COVID-19 wave"と言う記事からです。
さて、なかなか若い世代のワクチン接種が進んでいないようです。
ワクチンの効果や副反応に関するさまざまな情報が飛び交い、接種のメリットを疑問視しているためと考えられています。
若者が感染して、家庭内で広めるパターンも多いようです。私の周りにも沢山そのパターンで感染した方がいます。
若者に予防接種をさせるためのインセンティブプログラムの提供も始まってます。
例えば群馬県ですが、9月末までにワクチン接種を受けた20代から30代の方を対象に抽選でスバルの車が当たるとか。

語源
Etymology Dictionaryによれば、from Anglo-French escorge, back-formation from Old French escorgier "to whip," from Vulgar Latin *excorrigiare, from Latin ex- "out, off" + corrigia "thong, shoelace," in this case "whip," probably from a Gaulish word related to Old Irish cuimrech "fetter," from PIE root *reig- "to bind" (see rig (v.)). とあります。古フランス語のescorgierが由来で”e”が脱落した形です。更に俗ラテン語のexcorrigiareにまで遡るようです。ex-は「外に、離れて」＋corrigiaは「ひも」ということで、「ひもとは離れた使い方」という事なのでしょうか？
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、a whip used to punish people in the past、a person or thing that causes trouble, difficulty or mental pain と説明があります。前者は「鞭」です、語源とつながります。後者は、「鞭」と言う意味から派生した「苦難をもたらすものや人、苦難（災難）の原因、悩みの種、不幸のもと」と言った意味ですね。

Those in their 20s and 30s in Tokyo now make up a larger proportion of new infections than the previous wave in January, before the vaccination program started. Past surges have started with infections concentrated in younger people — who are more mobile — and later spread to the elderly. But the current wave in Japan, which has taken nationwide daily cases to more than 25,000 in the worst numbers reported yet, has largely remained a scourge among the young. In many wards of Tokyo, less than 20% of those in their 20s and 30s are fully vaccinated. *1
現在、東京の20代と30代の新規感染者の割合は、ワクチン接種プログラムが開始される前の1月よりも高くなっています。過去の急増は、行動が活発な若い世代から始まり、後に高齢者に広がりました。しかし、現在のこれまでに報告された最悪の新規症数25,000以上の現状は、若い世代の間で災難となっています。つまり、東京の多くの区では、20代と30代で2回目のワクチンを終えた人の割合は20％未満なのです。
