今日は"Olympian tattoos fail to leave their mark on the Japanese press"と言う記事からです。
prejudiceは復習です。大学の入学試験でよく見かけますが、私にとってなかなか頭に残らない単語の一つです。
さて、今日の記事は入れ墨の話です。
東京オリンピックでは、男女問わず入れ墨を入れている多くのアスリートを見ました。日本人では皆無でしょうか？アジア人も少なかったような気もします。
入れ墨をしている人に偏見を持つことはNGですが、やっぱり、私にはどうしても抵抗がありますね。
岩手水泳連盟の規則では、茶髪、ピアス、入れ墨、入れ墨、「派手な」ネイルを含む「意図的な身体装飾」が禁止されているそうです。ちょっと、これはやりすぎのような気もしますが。

語源
Etymology Dictionaryによれば、c. 1300, "despite, contempt," from Old French prejudice "a prejudice, prejudgment; damage" (13c.) and directly from Medieval Latin prejudicium "injustice," from Latin praeiudicium "prior judgment, judicial examination before trial; damage, harm," from prae- "before" (see pre-) + iudicium "judgment," from iudex (genitive iudicis) "a judge" (see judge (n.)). とあります。
ラテン語のpraeiudiciumが由来のようです。接尾辞のpraeが「前もって」、語幹のiudiciumが「判断する」という事で、前もって判断すると言う意味です。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、an unreasonable dislike of or preference for a person, group, custom, etc., especially when it is based on their race, religion, sex, etc. と説明があります。「先入観」、「偏見」です。語源の「前もって判断する」から考えれば、すごく納得のいく意味です。つまり、「（よく調べもしないで）前もって判断する」→「勝手な先入観をもつ」→「偏見」→「偏見をもって嫌悪感を抱く」と派生しますね。

「入れ墨に対する日本社会の偏見は正当化できないと私は長い間信じてきました」と茂木さんはツイートした。「東京オリンピックでは海外からの多くのアスリートが入れ墨をしています。だから、ここで、温泉やプールにある無意味なタトゥー禁止をやめたらどうでしょうか？」
