inundationは復習になります。レベル17の単語だそうです。
さて、ニューヨークやマイアミなどの沿岸都市では、今後30年以内に急速に水位が上昇し、多くの洪水をもたらすとの警告が出ているようです。
これらの都市では、既に満潮時に洪水が発生しているようです。海岸線沿いの住宅、企業、高速道路、その他のインフラは、洪水や海面上昇による被害を受けやすくなっているとの事。
ツバルなど一部国が将来被害を受けるのかなと思ってましたが、状況は思ったよりずっと悪いようです。日本も他人事ではないですね。
華氏5.5度（摂氏3度）を超える地球温暖化は、グリーンランドと南極の氷床の急速な融解に拍車をかけるようですから、もう待ってられない状態に来てます。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、"an overflowing, a flood," early 15c., from Latin inundationem (nominative inundatio) "an overflowing," noun of action from past-participle stem of inundare "to overflow," from in- "onto"+ undare "to flow," from unda "a wave," from PIE *unda-, nasalized form of root *wed- (1) "water; wet." とあります。ラテン語のinundare「あふれる」が由来です。in-は「～の上に」、undareは「流れる」という事で、上に向かって（液体）が流れている感じでしょうか？

Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、the fact of large amounts of water covering an area that is usually dry、a very large number of things or people と説明があります。前者は「洪水」、後者は「殺到、氾濫」です。

米国海洋大気庁（NOAA）が主導する米国の報告によると、海面は2050年までに12インチ（30センチメートル）も上昇すると予想されています。この量は地域によって異なりますが、浸水は沿岸洪水を引き起こし、潮汐と高潮をより深刻にするだろうと、複数機関の報告書は述べています。
補足
tidalは、connected with tides (= the regular rise and fall of the sea)で、「潮の」の意味です。
the inundation will lead to more coastal flooding は、なんと訳せば良いのやら。。「洪水が洪水をもたらす」になっちゃいますね。
