さて、 防衛力強化に向けた自民党の増税論議は、最終決着を先送りする形でひとまず収まったようです。
首相の指示に沿って税目や税率を明示する一方、慎重派の理解を得るため増税時期を曖昧にしています。近い将来、対立が再燃するのは確実でしょう。
自民党内でも反発が強いですが、理由の一つは、増税をすることにより、4月の全国地方議員選挙で自民党候補に対する有権者の反発への懸念です。
日本維新の会の馬場信行会長は記者団に対し、岸田首相の黄金の3年間は、首相としての任期を早期に終わらせる地獄の3年間に変わりつつあると語っています。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、"to kick a ball dropped from the hands before it hits the ground," 1845, first in a Rugby list of football rules, of obscure origin; perhaps from dialectal punt "to push, strike," alteration of Midlands dialect bunt "to push, butt with the head," of unknown origin, perhaps echoic (compare bunt).です。
ラグビー用語でしょうか？「地面に落ちる前に手から落としたボールを蹴ること」の意味です。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば以下です。

比喩的な使い方と想像しますが、punt the matter to the Supreme Court「事件を最高裁判所に委ねる」とあるので、「～を委ねる」の意味もありそうです。
