人生初の単語でした。
- 発音：クウェル(赤字がアクセント)
- 品詞：他動詞
- 語源：cwellan 古英語でkillの意味だそうです。クウェルとキルまぁ、少しは似てますが。
- 意味：主な意味は、～を抑える、～を鎮める、～を鎮圧する。で to end a situation in which people are behaving violently or protesting, especially by using force です。
quell something/somebody = to stop something such as violent behaviour or protests - 使用例：
China called the briefing after a weekend of demonstrations illustrated the challenge of quelling a protest movement that's leadersless, unpredictable and widespread.*1
リーダ不在、予測不可能で、多くの市民が参加している週末の抗議デモを鎮圧するのが困難になっているが、その後中国政府は記者会見を行った。
香港も大変な事になっていますが、韓国もそうですね。香港は民主化に向けて打倒中国共産党で、韓国は何に向けているのかわかりませんが打倒日本。どちらも感情的にならないようにと言ってますが、もう無理なんじゃないでしょうか？
