今日は"H.K. carries out mass arrests"と言う記事からです。
香港警察は国家安全維持法に違反したとして、民主派の53人を一斉逮捕しました。
逮捕されたのは最大政党「民主党」の胡志偉前主席らで、去年7月に行った立法会選挙の予備選に絡み、国家転覆の容疑がかけられているそうです。
また、逮捕者にはアメリカ人弁護士も含まれているということです。米中対立が一層激しくなりますね。
日米欧の先進国がコロナ対応でてんやわんやの中、中共はやりたい放題です。

Etymology dictionaryによれば、from Late Latin subiugationem (nominative subiugatio), noun of action from past participle stem of Latin subiugare "to subdue," literally "bring under the yoke," from sub "under" + iugum "yoke," とあります。ラテン語のsubiugareと言う動詞が由来で、これが名詞のsubiugatioになったようです。
bring (someone/something) under the yoke なので、yoke(牛を首あたりに板みたいなので連結させるくびき)で無理矢理引っ張ってくるみたいな感じでしょうか？ 束縛、圧迫、支配などがイメージされます。
意味
Oxford learner's dictionariesによれば、the act of defeating somebody/something; complete control over somebody/somethingとあります。「（武力による国民や国家の）征服」ことですね。
