今日は"Myanmar ties tested in wake of army coup"と言う記事からです。

rebelは復習かもしれません。

さて、今日のこの記事を読んで、びっくりしました。

ミャンマーって、日本も支援しているし、行き来もさんかんで、親日国家だと思ってましたが、

実は、そうではないのですね。

第二次世界大戦のとき、日本はミャンマーを含む東南アジアに軍を進めたのですが、そのためにミャンマーは日本を占領者とみなしているようです。

今もそういう感情があるのでしょう、なので、日本人が思うほど親日ではないようです。

 語源 
Etymology dictionaryによれば、形容詞が先で、c. 1300, from Old French rebelle "stubborn, obstinate, rebellious" (12c.) and directly from Latin rebellis "insurgent, rebellious," from rebellare "to rebel, revolt," from re- "opposite, against," or perhaps "again"+ bellare "wage war," from bellum "war".　とあります。

ラテン語のrebellareですね。 re- 「再び」 + bellāre 「戦争する」という事で、再び戦争する、という事になります。

 意味 

Oxford learner's dictionariesによれば、rebel (against somebody/something)の形で、to fight against or refuse to obey an authority, for example a government, a system, your parents, etc.とあります。「反抗する」ですね。

On the other hand, Myanmar used to see the Japanese as an occupier during the war and prides itself on its history of rebelling against Japan toward the end of WW II , establishing a narrative, now deeply ingrained in the military, that Myanmar defied both British and Japanese imperialism.  *1

一方、ミャンマーは戦時中、日本人を占領者と見なし、第二次世界大戦の終わりに向けて日本に反抗した歴史に誇りを持っている。それは現在ミャンマー軍に深く根付いており、ミャンマーは英国と日本の帝国主義に屈しなかったということが語り口となっている。

 補足 
ingrainedは、that has existed for a long time and is therefore difficult to changeです。defyは、to refuse to obey or show respect for somebody in authority, a law, a rule, etc.です。
