今日は"Myanmar junta fires two diplomats in Tokyo for opposing coup and violence"と言うトップ記事からです。
conscienceは基本的な単語ですが、conscious「意識がある」と混同します。
さて、ミャンマーの軍事政権ですが、東京の大使館の2人の外交官を解任しました。
理由は、2月1日のクーデターに抗議して職務をボイコットしたからです。
それより前にミャンマー軍事政権がミャンマーの国連大使を解雇し、4月に英国への使節を締め出したことに続くものです。
こうなると、彼らの日本での、外交特権やパスポートが無効になりますね。
日本政府は、彼らをちゃんと守るべきだと思います。強制帰国を許したら彼らの命が危ないです。なにせ、805人もの善良なミャンマー人を殺している政権ですから。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、This is from Old French conscience "conscience, innermost thoughts, desires, intentions; feelings" (12c.) and directly from Latin conscientia "a joint knowledge of something, a knowing of a thing together with another person; consciousness, knowledge;" particularly, "knowledge within oneself, sense of right and wrong, a moral sense," とあります。
古フランス語の conscience、さらに、ラテン語の conscientiaが語源でしょうか。con+scientiaで、conは、この場合は強意を表しているだけの気がします。scientiaはscire「知る」の名詞形です。「知っていること」が元の意味ですね。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、the part of your mind that tells you whether your actions are right or wrong と説明があります。「良心」が一般的な訳です。

補足
訳がへたくそです。。。
dishearteningは想像できますが、making you lose hope or confidenceの事で、 discouragingと同じ意味です。illegitimateも想像できますが、not allowed by a particular set of rules or by lawの事で、unauthorizedと同じ意味です。
