今日は"Suga asks businesses to slash commuter numbers amid virus resurgence"と言う記事からです。
rampantは、過去複数回出てますが覚えられないですね。印象がない。 一番最初のブログでも、きっと覚えられないだろうと自分で書いてました。。。
さて、コロナ感染者・重症者数は過去最多の水準となってます。背景には感染力の強いデルタ株の拡大があるようです。
菅首相が産業界に対して、出勤者数の7割削減を目指してテレワーク等の取り組みを進めていただきたいと話があったようです。
経団連のホームページにも出てますね。
政府は東京と他の5つの地域に出ている非常事態を9月12日までとし、さらに7つの都道府県ににも拡大することを決定してます。
さて、国民の意識はどうでしょうか？最近は結構電車が混んでますよね。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、c. 1300, raumpaunt, "standing on the hind legs" (as a heraldic lion often does), thus, also, "fierce, ravenous" (late 14c.), from Old French rampant, rampans, present participle of ramper "to climb, scale, mount" (see ramp (v.)). Sense of "growing without check" (in running rampant), is recorded by 1610s, probably is via the notion of "fierce disposition" or else preserves the older French sense. とあります。古フランス語のrampantが由来のようです。ん、、ピンとこないですね（だから覚えられない）。
よく制御工学でランプ応答とかありますが、このランプのことですね。スロープのイメージ。確かにライオンがやるように動物が後ろ脚で立つと背中がスロープになる。そのような状態の動物は威嚇している状態ですね。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、existing or spreading everywhere in a way that cannot be controlled と説明があります。「蔓延する」です。語源とリンクしてないような気がするのですが。。。
