今日は"Police identify man suspected in Tokyo subway acid attack"と言う記事からです。
vicinityは、そのアルファベットからは意味がほぼ想像できない単語の一つです。
さて、このパラリンピックの期間中に、変な男が火曜日の夜、白金高輪駅で、22歳の男性に硫酸と思われるものを投げつると言う事件が起きました。
容疑者として、静岡市葵区の職業不詳花森弘卓（25）が傷害容疑で指名手配されています。まぁ、すぐにつかまるでしょう。
その男性の他、一人の女性も被害にあったとの事です。
わざわざ、新幹線で静岡から来て、犯行に及び、また新幹線で静岡に帰るという、何が目的で、なぜ今、さっぱりわからんですね。
どうやら、その男性は花森弘卓容疑者と大学の先輩後輩の間柄だったようですね。何かいざこざがあったのでしょうか？
こういう事件を聞くと、犯人って本当に日本人なの？と最近特に思うようになりました。

Meaning "neighborhood, surrounding district" in English is attested by 1796. とあります。ラテン語のvicinitasが由来のようで、さらに同じラテン語のvicusまで遡るようです。vicusは「村」の意味でしょうか？
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、the area around a particular place と説明があります。「近所、近辺、付近」のことです。 in the vicinity (of something)で使う場合が多いようですね。ちなみに、同じような意味でneighborhoodがありますが、こちらは、勿論「近所、近隣（地）、自宅周辺」などという意味で、ただし住宅や商業施設などがある、人が住んでいる場所に対して使われます。

防犯カメラの映像は、火曜日に静岡から花森に似た男性が東京にやって来て、負傷した男性の近くにいたことを示していた。事件後、容疑者は品川駅から新幹線で同日帰宅した。
補足
resembleはたまに見かけます。他動詞でto look like or be similar to another person or thingの事です。もう一つworkplaceって「現場」の事だと思います。
