さて、昨日の京王線での内容です。
選挙速報報道のさなか、調布を走行中の京王線の車内で男が刃物を振り回して周りの乗客に切りつけ、さらに液体をまいて車内に火をつけるという事件が起きました。
これまでに17人がけがをして、このうち1人は意識不明の重体だということです。
男性を刺した男は殺人未遂の疑いで現行犯逮捕されました。
似たような事件が、少し前に小田急線で起きたましたよね。
逮捕された男は容疑を認めていて、「人を殺して死刑になりたかった」「小田急線の事件を参考にした」と話しているということです。
周りの人を巻き添えにしないでほしいですね。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、"move or raise," as a weapon, mid-14c., from Old French brandiss-, present participle stem of brandir "to flourish (a sword)" (12c.), from brant "blade of a sword, prow of a ship," which is from Frankish or some other Germanic source, from Proto-Germanic *brandaz "a burning," とあります。古フランス語のbrandir、古フランク語、その他ドイツ系言語、で、ゲルマン祖語のbrandazまで遡るようです。既に日本語になっているブランドって、もとは「剣を見せびらかす」意味があったんですね。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、to hold or wave something, especially a weapon, in an aggressive or excited way と説明があります。「（武器）を振り回す
」ですが、そこから「（物）を見せびらかす、誇示する」と言う意味もあるようです。語源に通じます。

補足
eyewitnessesは、容易に想像できますが、a person who has seen a crime, accident, etc. and can describe it afterwardsです。
