impending、impendって、あまりなじみのない単語ですね。
さて、政府は、新規感染者数は減少しているが、重症者の数は依然として高い水準で、医療提供体制も厳しい状況が続いているとして、首都圏などの都市部を中心に非常事態宣言を延長する方向です。
一方、１０月以降は、感染拡大地域でもワクチンを接種済みであれば、県をまたぐ移動を原則として認め、イベントの収容人数の上限を引き上げ、飲食店でのアルコールの提供の制限を緩め、日常生活を取り戻す取り組みを進めるようです。
ワクチンを打っても、また感染する人もいると結構聞くので、解除されても、当分は今のままの生活スタイルが続くと思います。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、1590s, from Latin impendentem (nominative impendens) "impending," present participle of impendere "to hang over" (see impend). とあります。
impendは、1590s, from Latin impendere "to hang over;" figuratively "to be imminent, be near," from assimilated form of in- "into, in, on, upon" (from PIE root *en "in") + pendere "to hang" (from PIE root *(s)pen- "to draw, stretch, spin"). です。結局、ラテン語のimpendereが由来のようです。im-は「into, in, on, upon」で「中に、上に」、pendereは「垂れ下がる」という事で、何のこっちゃよくわからんですが、「危険が、頭上にぶら下がっている」という状態を指しているようです。
suspend（sub+pend）やdepend（de+pend）も同じ語源のようです。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、(usually of an unpleasant event) that is going to happen very soon と説明があります。「差し迫る」です。
