さて、今日はオミクロンの記事です。
症状は重くないと言われているオミクロン株ですが、2022年の初めに対して重症者は約8倍に急増しているようです。
確かに症状は比較的軽いようですが、何せ感染力が強いので、感染した母数も多く、重症者が増えているのでしょう。
私も、久しぶりに今から通勤電車に乗りますが、正直言うと行きたくないですね。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、late 15c., from French vigilant or directly from Latin vigilantem (nominative vigilans) "watchful, anxious, careful," present participle of vigilare "to watch, keep awake, not to sleep, be watchful," from vigil "watchful, awake" とあります。ラテン語のvigilare「起きている、注意して見張っている」の現在分詞のvigilantemが由来のようです。ｖから始まる単語には、「元気」を表す意味が多いですが、元気だから、起きている、と言う事なのでしょう。

Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、very careful to notice any signs of danger or trouble と説明があります。「油断がない、用心深い、寝ずに番をする、慎重な、気を配っている、緊張感を持った」です。語源とつながります。
