さて、日本の自動車メーカーの決算が出揃いましたね。最近の円安を受けて好調なようです。
中でもトヨタ自動車はぶっちぎってますね。その次はホンダ。この2台巨頭で日本の自動車産業、日本系経済をけん引してほしいものです。
ただ、今後は半導体やその他の部品の不足が予想されるので、2022年の利益は相当落ち込むのではと思います。
そういえば落ち込んでいた日産自動車ですが、従来未定としていた前期の期末一括配当を5円実施し、2期ぶりに復配、今期も5円を継続する方針だそうです。またルノーに貢ぐんですかね。。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、figurative sense is attested from 1832, from profit-and-loss accounting, where the final figure calculated is the bottom line on the page. Also (especially as an adjective) bottom-line, bottomline. とあります。損益計算書の最後の行に書かれている損益（結論・結果）という事から、比喩的な意味で使われるようになったらしいです。そういう事だったんですね。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、the most important thing that you have to consider or accept; the essential point in a discussion, etc. と説明があります。つまり「最終結果、要点、肝心かなめ」の意味です。勿論、the amount of money that is a profit or a loss after everything has been calculated「最終利益、最終的な収益・損益」の意味もあります。

補足
fare wellは、fareがto be successful/unsuccessful in a particular situation「（事が）起こる、運ぶ」なので、「うまくやっている、好調である」です。
