whittleはあまり聞かない単語です。レベル14の単語らしいです。
さて、ウクライナ侵攻などの影響で日本でも物価上昇圧力が高まる中で、日銀の金融緩和の継続に対する批判が強まっています。
消費者物価指数が4月に前年比2.1％上昇し、主に燃料と原材料の高騰により、日銀の目標である2％を7年ぶりに上回ってます。
黒田総裁は、日本経済が新型コロナウイルス禍からの回復途上にあることなどを理由に挙げ「金融引き締めを行う状況には全くない」と強調。持続的・安定的な物価上昇へとつなげるため「揺るぎない姿勢で金融緩和を継続していく」と述べています。
賛成です。。。今止めたら大変なことになります。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、from Middle English whittel "a knife," especially a large one (c. 1400), variant of thwittle (late 14c.), from Old English þwitan "to cut," from Proto-Germanic *thwit- (source also of Old Norse þveita "to hew"), from PIE root *twei- "to agitate, shake, toss" (see seismo-). Figurative sense is attested from 1746. とあります。中英語のwhittel、古英語のþwitan、ゲルマン祖語の*thwit-、そして印欧祖語の*twei-が由来のようです。基本的な意味は「切る」ですかね。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、to form a piece of wood, etc. into a particular shape by cutting small pieces from it と説明があります。「（木など）を少しずつ削る」の意味です。
whittle downはイデオムで、to reduce the size or number of somethingという意味で、「（サイズや数など）を減らす」です。
