gleanは初です。レベル11、英検1級以上の単語です。
さて、相変わらず中共の軍が、無人偵察機やら、ドローンを沖縄あたりに飛ばしてますね。
最近、沖縄県の宮古海峡で、単独のTB001戦闘および偵察ドローンを初めて飛ばしたようです。
これらのドローン飛行は、台湾が5日間のコンピュータ上での軍事訓練を開始したときにも行われたようです。台湾の防衛省は、中共が台湾に侵入するために取ることができる「すべての可能な行動」をシミュレートしたと述べています。
最新の日本の防衛白書では、「台湾はわが国の南西の島々に非常に近く、最西端の小島である与那国島からわずか約110キロのところにあります。南シナ海、橋海峡、東シナ海の合流点に位置し、日本の重要な航路に面しています。これらの理由から、台湾を取り巻く状況の安定は、日本の安全だけでなく、国際社会の安定にとっても重要です。」と書かれています。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、early 14c., "to gather by acquisition, scrape together," especially grains left in the field after harvesting, but the earliest use in English is figurative, from Old French glener "to glean" (14c., Modern French glaner) "to glean," from Late Latin glennare "make a collection," of unknown origin. Perhaps from Gaulish (compare Old Irish do-glinn "he collects, gathers," Celtic glan "clean, pure"). Figurative sense was earlier in English than the literal one of "gather grain left by the reapers" (late 14c.).です。
もとは、「刈り取った畑の”落ち穂を拾い集める」の意味だったようです。古フランス語のglener、後期ラテン語のglennareあたりが由来でしょうか？いずれにしても「集める」が共通した意味ですね。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、glean something (from somebody/something)で、 to obtain information, knowledge, etc., sometimes with difficulty and often from various different placesと説明があります。「～を集める、収集する」の意味です。
集めると言う動詞は沢山ありますが、「刈り取った畑の”落ち穂を拾い集める」が元の意味なので、「苦労して様々な情報を集める」というニュアンスがあるようです。
