今日は"More Japanese men suffering from menopause amid COVID-19 pandemic"と言う記事からです。
menopauseは殆どの人は知らないと思います。レベル11、英検1級以上の単語です。
さて、男性の更年期障害ってご存じでしょうか？
40台くらいから、理由はわからないまま、この症状に悩まされる人が多いようです。
原因は、加齢とストレスで男性ホルモンであるテストステロンが減少するためです。これによって疲労や不眠などの症状が現れます。
「会社で意思決定をする人や、責任感の強い人は、症状が出ると言う傾向があります」との事です。
まだ、女性の更年期ほど知られていないので、何とか自分で対処するしかないですが、不安が強くなったり、やる気・記憶力・性欲の低下を認めたら病院へ行きましょう。
特に50代前半から中判にかけての方は要注意だと思います。
私も実は男性更年期障害の中にあるかも知れませんが、会社以外でもやる事が多くてあまり真剣に向き合っていなかったと反省してます。

フランス語のménopause、ラテン語のmenopausisが由来でしょうか。menはギリシャ語の「月」、pausisは「停止」を意味しているようです。これが何やら女性に関係しているようです。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、the time during which a woman gradually stops menstruating, usually at around the age of 50と説明があります。「更年期」の意味です。

新型コロナウイルスの世界的流行により、男性ホルモンの減少により心身に不調をきたす男性更年期障害の患者数が増加しています。女性の更年期障害と比較して、この症状についてはあまり知られておらず、政府や企業からの支援も普及していません。
補足
hormonesは、既に日本語になってますがホルモンの事です。a chemical substance produced in the body or in a plant that encourages growth or influences how the cells and tissues function; an artificial substance that has similar effectsと説明されてます。
