アポロ計画から60 年が経ち、米国は 再び月を目指しています。
なぜ今、月なのか？NASAによれば、最終目標は火星として、月へ人を送り込み、これによって、放射線などの環境が人に与える影響、火星への中継基地として役割、その他たくさんの事を十分に理解する必要があるからと言ってます。
もう一つは、2030年までに月へ人を送ろうとしている中国よりも先行させ、中国が「月は中国固有のもの」と言わせないようするためです。
しっかり成功させてほしいと思います。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、1530s, alteration of Middle English wydderen "dry up, shrivel" (late 14c.), intransitive, apparently a differentiated and special use of wederen "to expose to weather" (see weather (v.)). Compare German verwittern "to become weather-beaten," from Witter "weather." Transitive sense from 1550s. です。
中期英語のwydderen「からからに乾く、干からびる」が変化したという事でしょうか。
