さて、アリババのCEOであった、ジャック マー氏が、東大の客員教授になるらしいです。彼は、2020 年に中国共産党を批判した後、ほとんど公の場から姿を消したので、相当ひどい仕打ちを受けたのかと思ってました。
中共としては、彼を本土へ返したいらしいですが、本人は帰る気はなく、現在オランダ、スペイン、オーストラリア、タイ、日本を転々としているようです。
まさか、中国共産党のスパイとして活動することはないですよね。

Etymology Dictionaryによれば、from Latin obsessus, past participle of obsidere "watch closely; besiege, occupy; stay, remain, abide" literally "sit opposite to," from ob "against" (see ob-) + sedere "to sit,"です。
ラテン語の動詞であるobsidere「よく見る; 包囲する, 占領する; とどまる, 留まる, とどまる」が由来のようです。ob-「反対に」、sedere「座る」なので、反対側に座ると言う意味のようです。

補足
be committed toはよく見ます、「～にコミットしている」の事ですね。promiseに近いニュアンスです。
