今日の2024/4/17(Wed)は、matrimony, lineage, obscurity, mirage, rendition, insurrectionの6つです。

引き続き、英検1級でる順パス単（5訂版）のSection17の2巡目です。忘れかけている、または忘れてしまった単語を中心に復習します。

今日の単語については、以下のような関連付けで頭に入れてます。

matrimony → mother
lineage → line
obscurity → obscure → ob-(gainst) + scurf
mirage → mirror
rendition → re-(back) + donation
insurrection → in- + surge

renditionですが、render「援助を与える」の名詞形です。ちなみにsurrender「明け渡す」も同じ語源です。ここからなぜ「演奏、翻訳」と言う意味に変化していったのかは謎です。

解説：ラテン語のmater「mother(母)」と接頭辞の-monyは-ment 抽象名詞語尾と同じです。

品詞：名詞
意味：家系、血統
解説：よく見なくてもline「「紐、線、糸」が入ってますね。皆さんも家系図を作ったことがあると思いますが、先祖様から線でつないでいきます。

例文：He was enormously proud of the distinguished lineage of his family.　※enormously「非常に、ものすごく、大いに」

発音：əbskjúərəti(オブスキュリティ)
品詞：名詞
意味：世に知られていない事
解説：No1571のobscure「曖昧な」の名詞形ですね。

例文：The criminal's obscurity allowed him to disguise himself and escape.

mirage

発音：mirɑ́ʒ(ミラージュ)
品詞：名詞
意味：幻影(＝感覚の錯誤によって、実際には存在しないのに、存在するかのように見えるもの。まぼろし)、蜃気楼
解説：ラテン語のmiror「to wonder(驚く), to behold(見る)」が由来で、mirrorもそうでしょう。

例文：The  huge profits he anticipated turned out to be a mirage, and he ended up broke.

rendition

発音：rendíʃən(レンディション)
品詞：名詞
意味：演奏、翻訳
解説：re-はback、後ろはラテン語のdonare「to give(与える)」が由来で、言うまでもなくdonate「寄付する」が代表例です。所有権をもとに戻すという意味が、契約のことでしょうか、解釈、翻訳になり、その後に演奏と言う意味が加わったとあります。

例文：The audience was thrilled by the singer's renditions of various old fevorites.

insurrection

発音：ìnsərékʃən(インサレクション)
品詞：名詞
意味：暴動、反乱(=No43:uprising)
解説：No1250のinsurgencyとほぼ同じですね。in-は「against」、後ろはラテン語のsurgere「to rise(上がる)、get up(起き上がる)」が由来で、surgeが代表例です。何かに対して立ち上がるのでしょう。

例文：Troops were sent in to crush the insurrection in the province.
