2021/8/4(Wed)はsubdue です。
今日は"Tokyo shows an inflation pulse for the first time in a year"と言う記事からです。

語源
Etymology Dictionaryによれば、late 14c., "to conquer and reduce to subjection," from Old French souduire, but this meant "deceive, seduce," from Latin subducere "draw away, lead away, carry off; withdraw". The primary sense in English seems to have been taken in Anglo-French from Latin subdere and attached to this word. とあります。ラテン語のsubducereが由来のようですが、意味として、同じラテン語のsubdereの影響も受けているようです。前者はsub- + ducereという事で、「下に導く」という訳の分からない意味で、運び去るとかの事です。後者のsubdereは「服従させる」の意味らしいです。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、subdue somebody/somethingの形で、 to bring somebody/something under control, especially by using force と説明があります。「(力ずくで敵など)を征服・制圧する」です。
過去分詞のsubduedはもはや形容詞で、unusually quiet, and possibly unhappyで、つまり「抑えられた」と言う感じです。

Downward pressure on Japan’s prices is lifting as global energy markets rebound from the pandemic, but inflation remains far more subdued than elsewhere. In contrast with the Federal Reserve and other central banks considering an eventual withdrawal of stimulus, the Bank of Japan is likely stuck with its easing for the foreseeable future. *1
