Etymology Dictionaryによれば、Old English creopan "to move the body near or along the ground as a reptile or insect does", from Proto-Germanic *kreupanan, perhaps from a PIE root *g(e)r- "crooked" [Watkins].です。
古英語のcreopan「爬虫類や昆虫がするように、体を地面の近くまたは地面に沿って動かすこと」、ゲルマン祖語の*kreupanan「忍び寄る」が由来のようです。
