今日2023/8/20(Sun)は、perpetrate, stunt, respite, coercion, cruelty, onerousです。
英検1級でる順パス単（5訂版）のSection12の復習です。明確に頭に入っていない単語が多いです。やはり繰り返し繰り返しやるしかないです。
この繰り返しのやり方ですが、通常はスマホで目と耳で覚えようとしてますが、紙と鉛筆で「書く」のが、より良いという事が今回の夏休み中の勉強でわかりました。なるだけそうしたいですが、日々の勉強でこれをどうするか悩みますね。

品詞：他動詞、自動詞
意味：を犯す
解説：per-は「完全に」、petrateはラテン語のpatrare由来で「実行する」の意味があるらしいです。これ以上の説明がなく非常に覚えにくいですね、大方の人がこの単語に苦労しているようです。例えば、無理に戦争を始めたPutinのpからperpetrate crimeを連想できないかなと考えています。
例文：Putin and Lukashenko also are perpetrating crimes against humanity when they are persecuting – in the most brutal ways – their domestic opponents.

respite
発音：réspit
品詞：名詞、（他動詞）
意味：一時中断、休憩
解説：re-は「再び」、spiteはspectが変形したもののようで「見る」のイメージです。「もう一回、ここでよく見てみよう」という事なんでしょうか。もしくは、respect「尊敬」にも関連がありそうなので、「尊敬に値するのかどうかもう一回ここでよく見てみよう」ですかね。
例文：She continued to work without respite.

品詞：名詞
意味：威圧、強制
解説：これは非常によく見る単語です。動詞はcoerceですが、erceのところが何となくforceに似ているので、力で行動させるというのも一つの覚え方だと思います。
例文：The aged man paid the money under coercion.

発音：krúːəlti
品詞：名詞
意味：残酷さ、冷酷さ
解説：crude oilのcrude「生のまたは未加工の状態」と同じ語源らしいです。「荒い、調理されていない、生の、血のついた」の意味もあるので、これから「残酷さ」を想像できないかと考えています。
例文：The animal rights group protested against the cruelty of the fur industry.

onerous
発音：ɑ́nərəs
品詞：形容詞
意味：厄介な、煩わしい、骨の折れる
解説：英語ではhを発音しないことが多いので、無理矢理hをつけてhonerousで「骨です！」＝「骨の折れる」でどうかなと考えています。
例文：The minister also mentioned that “promoting human rights in North Korea is an onerous and complicated task that cannot be achieved by the government alone,” stressing that “all actors in our society, including the government, civil society, and academia, must put their heads together to solve the problem, not to mention cooperation with the international community.”
