さて、イーロン・マスク氏はツイッターで「日本はいずれ存在しなくなるだろう」と衝撃的な投稿をしましたね。
これって、去年10月時点の日本の総人口が前の年より、過去最大の64万人減少し、およそ1億2550万人となったというニュースに反応したものだったらしいです。
世界的にもやがて人口は減少するようで、マスク氏は、人口減少を「文明にとっての最大のリスク」だとして警鐘を鳴らしています。
その対策の一つが、人口減少による労働力不足を補う、ヒト型ロボット「オプティマス」だそうです。単なる宣伝ですかね？

語源
Etymology Dictionaryによれば、from Old French cesser "to come to an end, stop, cease; give up, desist," from Latin cessare "to cease, go slow, give over, leave off, be idle," frequentative of cedere (past participle cessus) "go away, withdraw, yield" (from PIE root *ked- "to go, yield"). Transitive sense "put a stop to," now rare, is from late 14c. とあります。古フランス語のcesser、ラテン語のcessare、cedereから来てるようです。「立ち去る」という意味があるようです。
意味
Oxford Learner's Dictionariesによれば、to stop happening or existing; to stop something from happening or existing と説明があります。「～を止める、中止する」です。
stopと同義語ですが、ceaseは非常に文語的、公式な堅い文章に登場する言葉です。

補足
sarcasmは、a way of using words that are the opposite of what you mean in order to be unpleasant to somebody or to make fun of them「皮肉」ですかね。angstは、a feeling of great worry about a situation, or about your lifeです。
